THE GUIDE
Snorkeling the Kerama Islands
Which boat day to book, what it includes, and the honest picture of the winter months.
The Kerama Islands are a chain of more than 20 islands about 40 km west of Naha, part of Kerama Shoto National Park since 2014. Their water, the shade of blue locals call Kerama blue, is among the clearest in Okinawa, and it is the reason most full-day snorkeling boats from Naha head west instead of up the coast. If the Blue Cave is the short trip from Onna, the Keramas are the day out.
The full day from Naha: from $70
A Kerama day is a boat trip, not an island visit: you snorkel two or three reef spots from the boat and come back to Naha. JOY CREATE’s full day is the one most people book, from $83 with 1,045 reviews (4.5): three spots, about seven hours, and the kit is generous, with snorkel gear, a wetsuit, a boat coat, towels, hot showers and photos included. Lunch is not, so bring something. Marine House SEASIR’s day trip costs less, from $70, rates higher at 4.8 from 500 reviews, includes a lunch box, and runs about nine hours. Cerulean Blue’s full day from Chatan is from $91 (4.5, 310 reviews) and visits two or three spots without landing on an island. All three prices checked October 2026, and all three cancel free up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the Kerama day
Half a day: from $45
Cerulean Blue’s half-day Kerama trip leaves Naha’s Miegusuku port at 9:30 or 14:15 and is back in about three hours, from $45 (4.2, 255 reviews). It includes Naha city transfers and photos, but not a wetsuit until mid-October, when one is free on request. It suits a first try, or a trip where the rest of the day is already planned.
Turtles, and what you will see
Coral, reef fish and, at the right spots, green sea turtles. Operators list turtles as likely rather than certain; they are wild. From mid-January through March, JOY CREATE’s boat also looks for humpback whales on the way.
The winter months
Searches for Okinawa snorkeling made in Japan fall to about a quarter of their October level from December to February and climb again from March, and that is the season people mean when they ask if it is too cold. The water is not: around 21°C in February against nearly 30°C in August, per Okinawa’s tourism board, which is why the full-day boats include a wetsuit. The catch is the schedule. At least one Kerama programme runs only from April to November, so check the calendar for your dates before planning around one. If the boats you want are not running, the Blue Cave runs all year when the sea allows; is the Blue Cave open today shows how to read the conditions.

What Guests Say About the Kerama Day
"We had a blast. We went to 3 snorkelling/diving spots on the day. The final one was our favourite. Fish everywhere and we even saw a sea turtle which was incredible, although I felt a little bad as we all swarmed around to get a look. The guides take photos of you in the water, on the boat and capture some photos of the reefs and sea life on the day. You can scan a qr on the boat and message them to receive the photos. You can also rent a go pro form.thrm to take your own videos/photos. We finished up around 3pm on the day and were driven back to our hotel."
"I would have liked the snorkeling sessions to be a little longer – about 35 minutes x 3. The third stop was not very different from the first one. Very friendly staff."
"If you can only do one activity, make it this one. It was incredible, I loved every minute of it! You do need to be a confident swimmer, and I would recommend having the lunch provided. Make sure you get on the right bus"
"An amazing experience!!! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!! All the instructors were very polite and attentive!!! Oh, and of course, special mention goes to the two Brazilian instructors, Patrícia and the other one whose name I unfortunately didn't get to ask. Go without hesitation!!!"
"It was wonderful. The ceremony was very relaxing, and the host of the ceremony speaks perfect Spanish. We really appreciated that because we were able to understand the entire ceremony and enjoy it. The matcha tea is amazing, and so are the sweets. Thank you very much. It was great."
"Good experience overall. The dive sites were surprisingly close – just a few dozen meters away, which was rather strange. Apart from that, the day was enjoyable, and it was definitely worth it."
"They absolutely went up and beyond what was expected for this trip. From providing very detailed instructions, making it very safe, very fun and had a good amount of time snorkeling. View was fantastic. must of seen 1000s fishs that day even saw sea turtle too."

Often, but not guaranteed: operators describe turtle sightings as likely because they are wild. Reef fish and coral are a given on a calm day.
About seven hours for JOY CREATE's full day, about nine for SEASIR's day trip with lunch, and about three for the half day.
No. You snorkel from the boat with a guide, and the full days include a wetsuit, which floats; Cerulean Blue's half day makes the life jacket compulsory. Tell the crew if you are nervous in open water.
On SEASIR's day trip, yes (a lunch box). On JOY CREATE's full day and Cerulean Blue's full day, no, so bring food.
JOY CREATE's full day takes children from 5 and the Cerulean Blue trips from 6, per their listings. Pregnant travellers and people with heart problems are not accepted on most boats.
The Blue Cave is a short trip from Onna, about one and a half to three hours, with a cave and a crowd. The Kerama Islands are a full boat day with clearer water and more reef. If you have one day for the sea, take the Keramas; if you have a morning, the Blue Cave.
From mid-January through March, humpback whales winter around the Kerama Islands, and JOY CREATE's full day looks for them on the way in that season.
